Downtown Pekin is filled with historic buildings and many of these buildings are being upgraded to today’s standards. The trend is to keep the historic charm of yesterday but have today’s modern conveniences. One such building is located on the corner of 4th and Court Street. Originally built as a bank in the 1890s it’s been a restaurant since 1994. Today it’s called Yesterday’s Bar and Grill.
Chef JoElle grew up in Pekin and ventured to the Chicago area working at several fine restaurants and hotels after being trained at Cordon Bleu. This gave her the experience she needed and after 13 years JoElle decided to return to her hometown of Pekin. Her dad was ready to retire so she worked a deal with her family to come home and take over the family business. This past April, JoElle married Ryan Master, whom she attended high school with here in Pekin.
Although the historic outside of the building might look like a bar, once inside a full menu is offered. Fish, chicken, steaks, soups, and appetizers are available. JoElle has big plans for this restaurant which includes unique wine tasting and dining for the entire family. She hopes to re-open the basement in the future and offer a unique experience for some quaint dining in the old bank safe for those special occasions. Wine tasting is also on her list.
There’s a lot of work yet to be done to refurbish this historic bank building. In talking with her you can see the determination in her eyes as she plots the future. It’s nice to see a local girl return home and find the love of her life, and it’s nice to see a historic building being re-purposed. Bring your family or a group of friends and enjoy having a meal or a few drinks in a friendly atmosphere. I’m sure you’ll appreciate what JoElle serves.
