Senior Transportation Service

In 2001 the first wave of Baby Boomers turned 65 and the last wave reaching that age in 2030. More than 71 million adults will be over 60 by that time and according to a recent study done by AARP’s National Household Travel Survey, more than 20% of those 65 and older will not be driving. With the average person outliving their driving years by 7 – 10 years, there is a real need for alternative transportation solutions to serve an ever growing demographic.
What happens when the things we take for granted—trips to the doctor, running to the grocery store, or gathering with friends—becomes a challenge? For many, a sense of isolation and depression can creep in. It is a feeling of the loss of independence and one that can lead to a lower quality of life. It is understandable then, that giving up one’s license can be a source of stress and worry.
There are, however, many reasons that seniors must relinquish their license. For some, it’s voluntary. Expenses like car maintenance, insurance, and gas, can become a factor in choosing not to drive. For others, the loss of confidence while navigating new and unfamiliar territory is compelling. There are those, of course, whose medical conditions like arthritis, slower reflexes, poor eyesight, or cognitive problems necessitate the need to give up one’s license for good.
Many cities and towns recognize the need for alternative transportation and have come up with unique solutions to help seniors feel independent and live active lives. Instead of thinking of it as a loss of independence, one can think of it as a change to the daily routine.
Lucky for Pekin residents, the Pekin Park District Miller Center offers a low-cost senior transportation service to community members 50 and older throughout Pekin and the surrounding areas. With six part-time drivers and two wheelchair accessible vehicles, seniors are driven nearly 1,600 miles a month averaging over 615 trips!
First priority rides are given to medical appointments but trips to the grocery store, pharmacy, and beauty salon are all par for the course. “Out of town” trips to Peoria, East Peoria, Morton, and Tremont occur every day, but are limited due to scheduling
The service operates on a donation basis, ensuring that anyone who needs a ride will get one. Suggested donations are $4 for Pekin trips, $11 for “out of town” trips, however no one is turned away for inability to pay.
The Miller Center transportation program is made available through the Pekin Park District along with the Pekin United Way and generous donations from riders and community organizations. They also host annual events like the Walk for a Ride event taking place on September 10th at 5:30pm at the Mineral Springs Pavilion and Lagoon in Pekin. This is their 17th annual event. For those who raise $25 or more, they will receive an event shirt, along with the satisfaction that 100% of donations stay in the community!
Aging does not mean losing the ability to enjoy life. The Miller Center transportation program offers adults who give up driving the opportunity to still participate in their normal day-to-day activities. More details can be found by visiting the center at 551 South 14th Street (in Pekin across from the Lagoon) or by calling 309-346-5210.
The Miller Center’s motto is “Enjoy Your Age,” with programs that make the day-to-day task of living a little easier—many seniors find they can do just that.
