Rooted In Our Hearts: Memories of Karl Jordan

What makes a good neighbor, a great neighbor? Family, friends and neighbors of Mr. Karl Jordan gathered on October 20th to celebrate his life and honor him with a tree planted in his memory.

The group pictured here donated money and worked directly with the Pekin Park Foundation to purchase a Flash Fire Maple tree that was planted mid-October off of Stadium Drive in Mineral Springs Park. It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon when the group met, shared stories, and reflected that they all believed Mr. Jordan would have loved the idea of adding another tree to the park. The location overlooking the high school, the stadium, and the Pekin Housing Authority make it a perfect spot to honor a man who dedicated many years of service to his community.

Mr. Jordan is remembered as a Social Studies teacher for 38 years at Pekin Community High School, an active member of the community, and a beloved neighbor to those who live in Sunset Hills. His kindness and thoughtfulness would brighten the day of his family, friends, and co-workers. He was quick to wave when passing by children playing in the neighborhood as he always drove at a cautious speed. Mr. Jordan was someone to offer up to help in the community. He would travel around in the winter clearing driveways and sidewalks for neighbors, even on the snowiest days. He also volunteered at the Housing Authority of the City of Pekin for 37 years and worked various Pekin High sporting events selling tickets and participating as a timer at track meets. Many remember calling out times with him and cheering on the students.

Mr. Jordan also enjoyed staying up-to-date about current events within the City of Pekin, the State of Illinois, and the world in general. When out for a walk, he was always happy to strike up a conversation and share good news. Besides collecting items, one of his other hobbies included cutting out newspaper articles and mailing them to those who were mentioned in the article. He was quick with his typewriter to send kind messages and those who knew him would consider him a great neighbor!
