Pekin Community High School (PCHS) has many wonderful educators, and one that stands out is Social Studies teacher, Colleen Kahl. Last month, Kahl received the Award of Excellence from the Illinois School Board of Education.

Kahl earned a Bachelors of Science in History Education at Illinois State University (ISU). She continued her studies and received a Masters degree in Liberal Studies at Bradley University, and then returned to ISU to earn a Masters in Global Politics and Cultures.

Kahl shows care for both her students and the school. She always goes above and beyond to help her students grow not only as learners, but also as members of their community. Since Kahl started teaching at PCHS, she has been involved in many ways. Some of her involvement includes, Student Council Advisor, Scholastic Bowl Coach, National Honor Society Advisor, Best Buddies Advisor, Cheerleading Coach, Union President, and much more.

One way that Kahl stands out at PCHS is that she brings in her therapy dog, Harper. Harper helps Kahl bring joy to the classroom with her fun outfits and allowing students to pet her. Building relationships with students, and making them feel welcome is a huge part of being an excellent educator.

Kahl’s colleagues also love having her around at PCHS. Anne Swanson, English teacher, stated ”I love Ms. Kahl, she is a very good friend of mine. She is a great teacher and she cares deeply about her job and the community.”

Administration also knows what an amazing teacher Kahl is. Shayla Ewing, PCHS Principal, nominated Kahl for the honor. Ewing stated, “I nominated Ms. Kahl for the ‘Those Who Excel Award’. It is not just like teaching classes and teaching content, but she makes connections for our students outside of the school building like internships with legislators or doing community service projects that get recognized.”

Over the past 28 years that Kahl has been working at PCHS, she has made a huge impact on students, teachers, administrators and the community as a whole. PCHS is lucky to have such an excellent teacher. Congratulations to Kahl on her award.
