The Pekin Hometown Voice

The Pekin Lions Club

The Pekin Lions Club in cooperation with the Lions of Illinois Foundation are collecting sneakers for recycling. We accept only pairs of sneakers with their laces tied together. They can be totally destroyed (recycled) or gently used (sent to 3rd world countries). Recycling boxes are located at the YWCA, Pekin Public Library, and at the Pekin High School.

200,000,000 – In the United States, at least 200 million pairs of shoes and sneakers end up in landfills each year.

30-40 Years – Shoes in landfills can take 30 to 40 years to decompose.

CO2 – Harmful chemicals are emitted into the soil and air, which pollutes our surroundings.

600,000,000 – More than 600 million people worldwide don’t even own a pair of shoes.
